Max was bought in Ireland as a young unbroken gelding !

He was such a kind loving horse,

He travelled back to us in fine shape and soon settled in with the other horses.

With the help of Caroline we started the process of schooling him.

In the early stages all went well.

He was happy to be lunged and accepted the bridle without any problems.

After a few weeks we decided to put the saddle on him in his stable.

That was when the problems started, the poor chap was petrified and acted like a western bucking bronco, we managed to get the saddle off him and console him.

He had obviously had a very bad experience in Ireland and far from being un-broken had had a saddle on him before.

What to do now?  Caroline and I were studying Parelli Natural horsemanship and had gained our level one pass. We knew Parelli was the way to go for Max if we were to overcome his fear of the saddle. If you would like to learn more of Parelli go to this site.

PAT PARELLI

Caroline and I set to work to introduce him to what we had learned from Parelli.

It was obvious to us that he wanted to please and learnt the seven games very quickly.

Time to try the saddle again !!!!!

Not looking promising but gradually he got to accept the saddle.

Things were looking promising and the day came when Caroline could sit on him.

I had tried five times before Parelli training and hit the ground every time.

A very exciting day for us both and the future for Max was looking good.

We walked Max every day in the school and then in the paddock.

With encouragement from me Caroline asked him to trot which he did quite happily.

Now this is really promising but things were to change !!

We think something may have startled him but the next thing we knew he was in his old bronco state of mind and poor Caroline had a crashing fall and was out of action for a couple of weeks.

Once again we were in a dilemma of how to continue, we were running out of ideas.

Caroline had heard of a Parelli centre in France that did a months course for colts that had problems, it is called La Cense.

You may wish to visit their web site.

Contact was made with La Cense and sure enough they would take Max for a month.

I have a friend based in Hythe Kent who imports and exports horses all over Europe .

It was arranged for me to take Max by trailer to Hythe where he would be stabled overnight before making the crossing the next day to France in one of John's luxury lorries.

We arranged with La Cense to visit Max after a month and stay for a two day course on how to handle Max “Marie” his trainer showed us how she worked him on the ground before sitting on him in the round pen. No crash hat and a western saddle ! ! !  But that he was not yet ready to come home and wanted to keep him another two weeks at no extra charge.

We left Max behind and promised to come back in two weeks.

Two weeks later we left for France , was this to be a happy ending !

We spent the two days with Marie and Max going over how we should continue with him when he came home. on the last morning Caroline rode him in the forest around La Cense and I went with her on one of the centre's horses complete with western saddle, not too sure about that !

John Parker International picked Max up that day and the next time I saw him was back in Hythe

He travelled home in my trailer very well.

I have ridden him every day for the past month and he has gone from strength to strength.

These pictures were taken today.

The future is bright for Max now. Thanks to Caroline's hard work and patience. And Marie for helping us so much.

I have to admit there were times when I thought we would never succeed.

Thank you Parelli, you have given Max a future.

September 2006

Max is going so well now I thought it would be nice if we could introduce him to the carriage.

He was remarkably calm so I went ahead and put him in the carriage

Everything was looking good after a week and it looked like he was going to be a carriage horse as well

WRONG  !!!

Something startled him and he got his old fear back and bucked until the carriage came off.

That was just too much for him and I decided that he was doing too well to spoil the progress made.

He is happy to ride out in company and has now started jumping, you can see from the picture that he loves

it and will jump anything

Hopefully he can have some fun with us jumping in hunter trials

He has given us so much thanks to Parelli
